Bernie Sanders seeks to expand appeal to South Carolina and beyond
This headline has a lot going for it. Let’s look at just a couple of things.
First of all, it credits Senator Sanders with the ability to expand his appeal by simply willing it, as though he is responsible for the people who are attracted to him and his ideas. This would seem to devalue the autonomy, self awareness and freedom-to-choose of his followers, as though he is some kind of Svengali ‘expanding his appeal’.
Even though this seems to go against the accepted idea that everybody gets to make up their own mind, metaphorically this could be reminding us that we are, in fact, able to manifest things by simply willing them. (you get what you concentrate on)
Secondly, what is the stance of the writer(s) of this headline? They seem to be inhabiting a space where they feel empowered to intuit and understand the motives of others and then comment on them according to their own agenda. This produces a kind of separation.
Does this reflect our own tendency to assume, perhaps falsely, that we understand our whole Self’s motives and intentions, with the consequent feelings of separation?
